Inspired by the High-Low Mix in This Fashion Designer's Home

When Peter Som bought his first apartment, he was still in college. “It was one of the best investments I have ever made. It was pennies on today’s New York dollar,” says the fashion designer, then a student at Parsons, who went on to live in the space for many years. One morning he walked into the hall and noticed that the studio next door was having an open house. Peter bought that apartment too and in 2008 combined them to make his now 1,300-square-foot one-bedroom in Manhattan's gorgeous West Village. With the help of his mother Helen Fong, a San Francisco-based architect, Som started the ideation process around the layout of the combined apartments and then ended up turning to New York architects Jeffrey Cayle and Ian Colburn to see the project through. “I grew up in a house that was light and bright," says Som of the family's Mill Valley residence his mom designed. "I wanted to have the same experience in my own home, too.” Read on and tour the whole home to learn how he made that happen.
